Nediumji, Nediumji... An old singalong song following the old and well-known Dutch folklore, sung in a language which has been derived from Dutch, and which is still spoken by a small number of old retired fishermen. They were able to have a conversation with the words spoken backwards; this proved to be helpful in misleading the taxmen at the harbour. The music has the seldomly found form of cut-off Tango. All has been recorded in an old pub in a backstreet of IJmuiden. copyright: Willem Scheelings 10 november 2000 introductory e-mail: It has been long since Blatant Bill presented his last song: as is known to his friends he is, inspired by Bela Bartok, doing musical-anthropological research. In an old pub in IJmuiden Town he managed to make a unique recording of a seldom heard IJmuiden song. We hear the voice of an old fisherman, accompanied by what the Irish call 'The Box' and a mouth organ. Presently, the musical form 'cut-off tango' can hardly be found. Unfortunately this recording is unique only for connaisseurs: the local tongue cannot be understood and may be deciphered with a lot of trouble; Old fishermen do not play the 'box' very well; the music is, possibly under the influence of old gin, simple and full of repeating patterns. Usually we don't like this very much. There is quite some background noise from the other visitors of this pub. With the simple recording tools this could not be avoided. Sailors call a glass of Gin 'Oorlam' which may be translated as 'Lame Ear', so be warned. Despite all of this B. Bill presents with held back joy his new finding, a swain amidst pearls, called: [Nediumji, Nediumji....] Those who want to listen, better have no feeling. I tried to translate the inverted Dutch text into English; I'm afraid that it does not help much to understand this song. It is a love song of a sailor who is left by his girlfriend; she left him to become a hooker and is very rich now. Nediumji, Nediumji... Ijmuiden, Ijmuiden... Ijmuiden, Ijmuiden...
